Before Oak Park, there was Kettlestrings Grove
Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings set across the Atlantic, seeking more space and opportunity in 1833. After leaving Baltimore, their ox-drawn, covered wagon pulled them west, through marshy soil and boggy wetlands until they came upon “a ridge of dry land abounding with oak trees.” This would become what is now Oak Park – just 8 miles west of Chicago.
